A Day of Hell in the Sahel

Understanding the Escalating Violence

June 2, 2025 marks a harrowing day in Mali and Burkina Faso, as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) launched a series of coordinated attacks that shook both nations to their core. Within a span of 24 hours, eight operations unfolded, evenly distributed between the two countries, targeting military installations, armoured patrols, and critical entry points.

In Mali, the pivotal moment came with the devastating assault on the military base in Mopti State, near the border with Burkina Faso. This base, strategically vital to Malian defence efforts, fell into the hands of AQIM fighters following fierce clashes that resulted in significant casualties. Initial estimates indicate the loss of around 100 Malian soldiers and 15 Wagner Group fighters, with an additional 15 soldiers and four mercenaries captured by the attackers.

One particularly haunting image from these events has circulated widely on X, depicting the commander of the Polxi base in Mopti in the custody of AQIM fighters after they successfully seized control.

The Impact of Jihadist Violence

The assaults were not confined to Mali alone. Across the border in Burkina Faso, similar operations unfolded with tragic consequences. The scale and coordination of these attacks underscore the escalating threat posed by jihadist groups like AQIM in the Sahel region. These groups, including Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), have capitalized on local grievances and security vacuums exacerbated by the withdrawal of international peacekeeping forces.

Examining Specific Attacks

In Mali, the assault on the Boulkessi military base near the Burkina Faso border epitomizes the brutality and strategic prowess of the attackers. The attack commenced with a predawn strike by JNIM militants equipped with vehicles and motorcycles. Initial reports suggested the use of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) to breach the base's defences, unleashing chaos as fighters engaged Malian troops within the facility.

Footage from the scene depicted a scene of sheer terror and tragedy, with militants brazenly navigating through the base amid ongoing combat. Despite valiant efforts by Malian soldiers to defend their positions, the overwhelming force of the attackers forced a retreat, allowing JNIM to temporarily seize control.

Response and Countermeasures

In response to the attacks, the Malian Armed Forces mobilized air support, including drones, to pursue retreating militants. These efforts, while critical in reclaiming lost ground, highlight the ongoing struggle faced by Malian authorities in quelling the insurgency.

The international community, including bodies like the United Nations and regional alliances, has condemned these attacks and emphasized the urgent need for coordinated counterterrorism strategies. However, the situation remains complex, with local dynamics and geopolitical tensions complicating efforts to restore stability.

Humanitarian and Regional Implications

Beyond the immediate security implications, the attacks deepen the humanitarian crisis in Mali, where hundreds of thousands remain displaced, and regional stability hangs in the balance. The broader Sahel region, encompassing Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, continues to grapple with the fallout from extremist violence, exacerbated by socioeconomic challenges and climate change.

Looking Ahead

As Mali and its neighbours navigate the aftermath of these assaults, the resilience of jihadist groups and the efficacy of counterterrorism measures are thrust into the spotlight. The international community's support remains crucial in bolstering regional security and addressing the root causes driving extremism in the Sahel.

In conclusion, the events of June 2, 2025 serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against jihadist violence in the Sahel. The toll on lives and the destabilizing impact on regional security underscore the urgent need for sustained international engagement and effective strategies to combat extremism and restore peace to Mali and its neighbouring nations.

Rapid Support Forces Declare a Parallel Government in Darfur as El Fasher Starves

Since April 2023 Sudan has been locked in civil war between the national army, commanded by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (“Hemetti”). Over time the conflict has assumed a geographic logic: the army controls the Red Sea corridor and the east from Port-Sudan, while the RSF entrenches itself in Darfur and parts of Kordofan.
