Alert Notice – Security situation in Goma town is still bad
A taxi driver was fatally shot near the Kituku roundabout in Goma's Kyeshero neighbourhood during the night of December 23 to 24, 2024. Local sources report that unidentified armed individuals attacked the driver while he was working. Despite rapid blood loss, the victim did not survive. Authorities, alerted by passersby, transported the body to the morgue at North Kivu Provincial Hospital.
This incident has alarmed fellow taxi drivers, who feel increasingly targeted by armed assailants, jeopardizing their profession. One member of Goma's taxi drivers' association expressed concern: "We have become easy targets. If nothing is done, many drivers may abandon their work out of fear for their lives."
In response, a Congolese National Police officer stated, "We will not let this act go unpunished. An investigation has already been opened to identify and arrest those responsible." Despite ongoing efforts by police and military authorities, Goma's security situation remains troubling, with armed individuals continuing to instil fear among the population.
